As bitterly cold temperatures spread across the country this week, many parents face the challenge of prospective school closures. Unexpected days off create havoc for students, teachers, parents and the companies who employ those parents.

With temperatures in some cities not expected to be above zero (the high in Chicago on Wednesday predicted to be -13 degrees Fahrenheit), even before the wind chill is considered, schools must also face the difficult decision of whether or not to close for the day.

One suburban Chicago school district has tried to manage parents’ expectations with an email explaining exactly how the decision to close school is made.

 

“The decision to close school is more complex than most people realize,” begins the email from the district’s superintendent. “With the safety of our students and staff foremost in mind, decisions to close are circumstance-specific.”
